What is Banjo in the Hollow all about?
BITH is a non-profit association dedicated to the enjoyment and preservation of Old Timey, Traditional, & Bluegrass Music.  While our post office box is in Cary, NC, our members are spread throughout the country with the largest majority living right here in North Carolina.  Members of BITH may be pickers, non-pickers, and some are even professional musicians; all that is required of a member is that he or she share in our enjoyment of the music that is a part of American culture and heritage.  BITH has monthly picking sessions, where members get together and play in an “open” format, just a bunch of music lovers having a good time.  The non-pickers are always invited to bring the family out and “pull up a chair” and enjoy the music.  We offer Pig Pickin’s during the year, a Camp-N-Pick, and we host an annual one day Bluegrass Show at Bond Park in cooperation with the City of Cary.  At various times during the year the BITH will offer special workshops on banjo, mandolin, guitar, Dobro, and other instruments featuring the best guest instructor that can be found in his/her area of expertise.  Banjo in the Hollow is all about having fun for the whole family.  BITH is always exploring new ways in which to make being a member worthwhile and exciting.

I’d like to join but I don’t know anybody.  How do I meet other BITH members?
Once you join Banjo in the Hollow, you are a friend who is welcome at all events.  When you come to any of our functions, just walk up to anybody and introduce yourself.  You’ll find our members to be warm, open and friendly, especially if it’s your first time coming to any of our events.  Any member will be glad to answer questions, point you out to BITH officers, and help you to feel “right at home” from the start.  With nearly 300 members in BITH, it is impossible for a member to know everybody, but with every member that you meet, you’ll have made a new friend.

How much does it cost to be a member of Banjo in the Hollow?
It only costs $10.00 to join, and dues are $15.00 yearly after that.  You will receive a membership card, a coupon for $10.00 off on merchandise at Zepp’s Country Store, and a quarterly newsletter.  Remember, the entire family is welcome at BITH events and each head of household needs only one membership.  One teenager asked if he could join the BITH since he was interested in joining but his parents weren’t, and the answer to that question was that he could join, we include our offers to anybody who desires membership, not just adults.

What Other BITH activities can I become involved in?
Elections for Officer and Board positions are held every year.  You can be nominated to run for a position if you so desire.  BITH also maintains a Volunteer List for members that would like to help out occasionally on special functions that we may be hosting.  We encourage members to submit articles of interest for the Quarterly Newsletter, and to submit any information about upcoming Bluegrass shows, festivals, or other events that may be of interest to the BITH as a whole (we don’t always know about each and every event coming to our area or the State).  The BITH Board also welcomes any sort of input or ideas that can make BITH a better organization, one that will hopefully allow all members to experience a maximum level of satisfaction with the organization.

Does Banjo in the Hollow provide musical instruction?
We are not a teaching institution and do not give organized musical instruction.  Members do exchange information, licks, techniques, and assist other members to learn a tune or a piece at pickin’ sessions.  We do have members, who are music instructors on various instruments, but we do not solicit business for them, any arrangement between an instructor and a potential student is between those individuals.  We also have some members who enjoy working with youths in order to help develop their musical skills, once again this is voluntary and not a structured instruction.

How can I join Banjo in the Hollow?
You may join on-line at our website, or you may download an application and mail it in along with the initial fee, or you can come to any of the monthly pickin’ sessions and join up on the spot.  There is usually at least one Board member or Officer present at every event.  Please join today; we are looking forward to handing you an ID card, and welcoming you into the BITH fold.  If you have any other questions you may submit them to:
